Miramichi Pee Wee AAA Cardinals Continue to Roll With Sweep of Moncton

2012-06-17

Zack Newman is all smiles as he is congratulated by his teammates after hitting a long 2 run homer vs. Moncton on Sunday.

Cards win all 4 games played on weekend

After sweeping the Lancaster Stingrays on Saturday, the Pee Wee AAA Cardinals returned to action on Sunday facing the Moncton Cubs.

The Cards got off to a slow start and found themselves in a big hole early as they trailed the Cubs 7-0 going into the bottom of the 4th. However, as they have done all season, the Cardinals had no intentions of going down without a fight as they rebounded with 5 runs of their own to close the gap to 7-5. After a couple innings of trading pairs of runs, Miramichi found themselves trailing 11-9 heading into the bottom of the 7th. The never say die Cards responded with 2 runs to tie the game and sealed the victory when Zack Newman scampered home on a wild pitch to make the final 12-11 for the Cardinals.

Newman led the Miramichi hitting attack going 3-4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Trey Dunnett, Alex Doucet, Max Martin, and A.J. Adams recorded 2 hits each, while Jonathan Russell and Jonathan Henderson chipped in with singles. Jonathan Martin in relief of Russell and Henderson earned the mound victory.

Having already won 3 games on the weekend, the Cardinals proceeded to go for the clean sweep in Game two vs. the Cubs. Things looked good early on as Miramichi jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play. The Cards doubled their lead in the 2nd when Newman drilled a mammoth home run to straight away centerfield also cashing in Dunnett and making the score 4-0. Evan Savoy followed with a run scoring single to knock in Cole Trepanier.

Miramichi built up a 10-3 lead after 5 innings, but Moncton refused to go quietly and rallied with 6 runs in the 6th to close to within a run. Trepanier and Savoy added run scoring singles in the Cards half of the 6th to increase the lead to 12-9. The Cubs managed to get two back on a 2 run blast off the bat of Jae Lee, but that is as close as they would get as Dunnett closed out the game on the mound to earn the save.

Savoy paced the Cardinals at the plate going 3-4 with 2 RBI's, Newman was 2-3 with a HR, 3 RBI's, and 2 runs scored. Trepanier and Russell also added 2 hits each, while singles went to Doucet, Adams, and M. Martin. Newman earned the win on the hill while getting relief help from Ben Forrest and Dunnett.

The Cardinals now have a record of 8-1 in league play and next see action when they play a home and home doubleheader against the Fredericton Royals next weekend. Saturday action takes place in the capital city, while the two teams face off in Miramichi on Sunday with games starting at 11am at the Gretna Green Upper Field.
